Bound by their love for each other, but torn by their conflicting notions of ideal love, they struggle to cope with reduced circumstances and the pressure to marry well, while staying true to themselves. Deception, dashed hopes, and near-tragedy eventually bring them closer together and put them within reach of true and lasting happiness.
